Prince Andreas was born two months prematurely on 21 June 2010 to Prince Carl Fredrik, Duke of Västerbotten and his wife, Princess Nathalie, Duchess of Västerbotten. His father is the second child and elder son of Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden. His mother is the youngest child and younger daughter of Richard, 6th Prince of Sayn Wittgenstein berleburg and Princess Benedikte of Denmark. His birth was greeted by two 21-gun salutes in the island of Skeppsholmen, Sweden. His names and tiles were announced the day after his birth on 22 June 2010, by his paternal grandfather, Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden at a cabinet meeting. After the cabinet meeting a Te Deum was held in honour to celebrate the Prince's birth in the presence of his father, his elder sisters, his elder brothers, his maternal and paternal grandparents and his aunt and uncles.
He was born two days after the wedding of his aunt, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. His mother, Princess Nathalie was seven and a half months pregnant when she gave birth to Prince Andreas.
Prince Andreas was christened on 22 October 2010 at the Royal Chapel of Stockholm Palace, Sweden.
His godparents are:
- Princess Madeleine, Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland, his father's younger sister
- Gustav, Hereditary Prince of Sayn Wittgenstein berleburg, his mother's only brother
- Prince Nikolaos of Greece and Denmark, his mother's first cousin
