Princess Leona of Sweden, The Duchess of Öland (Leona Victoria Ingrid Silvia Benedikte; born 27 April 2001) is the eldest child and only daughter of Prince Carl Fredrik, Duke of Västerbotten and Princess Nathalie, Duchess of Västerbotten.

As of April 2017, Princess Leona is fifth-in-line to succeed the Swedish throne after her aunt Victoria, her two younger cousins Estelle and Oscar and her father The Duke of Västerbotten.

Birth and Life Edit

Princess Leona was born at 17:25 CET on 27 April 2001 at Drottningholm Palace, Sweden. She is the eldest child of five and is the only daughter of Prince Carl Fredrik, Duke of Västerbotten and Princess Nathalie, Duchess of Västerbotten. Her father is the eldest son and second child of Carl XVI Gustaf and his German-born wife Queen Silvia of Sweden and her mother is the younger daughter and the youngest child of the late, Richard, 6th Prince of Sayn Wittgenstein berleburg and Princess Benedikte of Denmark. The birth was greeted by two 21-gun salutes on the island Skeppsholmen, opposite the Royal Palace in the capital of Stockholm. Her names and titles were announced on 28 April 2001 by her paternal grandfather Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden at a cabinet meeting. After the cabinet meeting, a Te Deum was held in the palace's royal chapel to celebrate her birth in attendance was her paternal and maternal grandparents, her father, her paternal and maternal aunts and uncle. The princess was born three days before her paternal grandfather Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden celebrated his 55th birthday on 30 April.

The Princess has four siblings, four younger brothers:

Princess Leona's maternal grandfather, Richard, 6th Prince of Sayn Wittgenstein berleburg suddenly died on 13 March 2017, at Berleburg Castle, Germany. He was aged 82 at the time of his death. He died two days before her brother, Prince Frederik's 10th birthday on 15 march and 17 days before her younger brother Prince Wilhelm celebrated his 12th birthday on 30 March.

Princess Leona was christened on 18 July 2001 at the Royal Chapel of Stockholm Palace in Stockholm, Sweden.

Confirmation Edit

Princess Leona was officially confirmed into the Church of Sweden on 1 January 2016 in Öland. The Primcess's family and godparents were in attendance. Her father, uncle and aunts were also confirmed at the same place.

Education Edit

In May 2003, Princess Leona started preschool at Äventyret Preschool in Danderyd Municipality, Stockholm and finished in 2005.

On 19 August 2006, six-year-old Princess Leona started her Junior education in Fife, Scotland. Her Junior primary school was called Kelty Primary School, she finished there in 2013 after seven years.

On 19 August 2013, Princess Leona started secondary school in Fife, Scotland. Her Secondary school is called Cowdenbeath High School. In August 2016, Princess Leona became a Full-time Senior, when she passed Junior phase and was accepted into senior phase at her school and she got presented with a blazer and certificate. It has been announced that the Princess will be leaving after four years, on 31st May 2017.

Royal Duties Edit

As Fifth-in-line to the Swedish throne, Princess Leona has been in the spotlight since her birth in 2001.

Princess Leona has been on long and short distance tours with her parents and youngersiblings.

From 18 to 24 January 2017, Princess Leona with her parents, The Duke and Duchess of Västerbotten with her four younger brothers Prince Wilhelm (age 11), Prince Frederik (age 9) and 7-year-old twins, Prince Gabriel and Prince Louis visited the United States of America for the Inauguration of President-Elect Donald John Trump, on 20 January 2017 and they all attended the National Prayer Service on 21 January 2017.

Royal Functions Edit

On 30 April 2001, three-day-old Princess Leona carried by her mother onto the balcony of the Royal Palace to celebrate the 55th birthday of her paternal grandfather, Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. The King introduced the princess to the Swedish nation.

On 21 May 2003, Princess Leona (aged 2) for the first time visited her duchy, Öland accompanied by her parents to visit her horse which was given to Leona at her christening in 2001, named Daisy at the museum of Öland.

On 14 May 2004, Princess Leona (aged 3) was a flowergirl at the wedding of her second cousin, Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark to Mary Donaldson, later Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark. Her first cousin, Prince Richard and her third cousin, Prince Nikolai of Denmark were pageboys.

On 31 March 2005, Princess Leona attended the Te Deum of her younger brother the day after his birth. On 2 April 2005, Princess Leona visited Danderyd Municipalty three days following the birth of her younger brother.

On 19 June 2005, Princess Leona (aged 4) attended the christening of her younger brother three-month-old, Prince Wilhelm, Duke of Södermanland.

On 20 August 2005, Princess Leona (aged 4) visited Borgholm Castle, a city in her duchy Öland accompanied by her parents to re-open the new refurbished Castle by opening the gate assisted by her father, Prince Carl Fredrik, she and her parents was greeted by the Mayor of Borgholm.

On 21 January 2006, She and her parents attended the christening of her third cousin, Prince Christian of Denmark. The eldest child and elder son of the Crown Prince of Denmark.

On 30 April 2006, three days after she celebrated her fifth birthday she with her parents and her one-year-old brother and the rest of the Swedish Royal family celebrated the 60th birthday of her paternal grandfather, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

On 16 March 2007, Princess Leona, her younger brother and their father attended the Te Deum to celebrate the birth of their younger brother. On 17 March 2007, She with her father and younger brother visited Danderyd Municipality two days after her mother gave birth her second brother, Prince Frederik.

On 15 June 2007, Princess Leona attended the Christening of her younger brother, Prince Frederik, Duke of Jämtland.

On 1 July 2007, she with her parents and younger brother attended the christening of her third cousin, Princess Isabella of Denmark. The second child and first daughter of the Crown Prince of Denmark.

On 19 June 2009, Princess Leona, her younger brothers and the rest of her family celebrated the 10th anniversary of her parents' marriage with a church service and an anniversary dinner.

On 26 July 2009, She with her mother and younger brother attended the christening of her third cousin, Prince Henrik of Denmark, third son of Prince Joachim of Denmark.

On 17 January 2010, Princess Leona with her father and younger brothers attended the Te Deum to celebrate the birth of her younger brother.

On 18 June 2010, Princess Leona (aged 9) with her parents and her brother, Prince Wilhelm (aged 5) attended the pre-wedding concert of her paternal aunt, Crown Princess Victoria and Mr Daniel Westling.

On 19 June 2010, Princess Leona was a bridesmaid at the wedding of her paternal aunt, Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden to Mr Daniel Westling, later Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland. Her brother as a pageboy during the ceremony, her parents were also celebrating their 11th wedding anniversary and her grandparents were celebrating their 34th wedding anniversary.

On 14 April 2011, Princess Leona and her brother, Prince Wilhelm attended the christening of their third cousins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine of Denmark. The twin of children of The Crown Prince of Denmark. Her father, Prince Carl Fredrik is the godfather of Princess Josephine.

On 29 April 2011, Princess Leona with her parents and her six-year-old younger brother attended the Wedding of Prince William of Wales and Catherine Middleton. Her paternal aunt and uncle, Victoria and Daniel also attended the wedding. The Princess celebrated her 10th birthday, two days earlier and Prince William is the godfather of her brother, The Duke of Södermanland.

On 2 July 2011, ten-year-old Princess Leona with her parents, her younger brother, her grandparents, her aunts and uncles attended the Wedding of Albert II, Prince of Monaco, and Charlene Wittstock.

In January 2012, Princess Leona with parents and her two younger brother's celebrated the 40th Ruby Jubilee Reign of her great-aunt, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. Her mother, Princess Nathalie is the niece of the Queen of Denmark.

On 22 May 2012, Princess Leona with her parents and younger brother's attended the christening of her first cousin, Princess Estelle, Duchess of Östergötland. The eldest child and only daughter of her paternal aunt, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. Her father, Prince Carl Fredrik is the godfather of Princess Estelle.

On 8 June 2013, twelve-year-old Princess Leona along with her parents and younger brother's attended the wedding of her paternal aunt Princess Madeleine, Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland and Mr Christopher O'Neill.

On 15 September 2013, Princess Leona with her parents and younger brother's attended the Te Deum service to celebrate her paternal grandfather's 40th year on the Swedish throne after the service she appeared on the balcony with her family.

On 8 June 2014, 13-year-old Princess Leona with her parents and younger brother's attended the christening of her first cousin, Princess Leonore, Duchess of Gotland at the Royal chapel of Drottningholm Palace.

On 13 June 2015, 14-year-old Princess Leona with her parents and younger brother's attended the wedding of her paternal uncle, Prince Carl Philip, Duke of Värmland to Miss Sofia Hellqvist, later Duchess of Värmland. Her father was best man and her younger brother's were Junior supporter and pageboy.

On 11 October 2015, Princess Leona along with her family attended the christening of her first cousin, Prince Nicolas, Duke of Ångermanland. Her father, Prince Carl Fredrik is Prince Nicolas's godfather.

On 30 April 2016, Princess Leona joined in with the rest of the Swedish Royal Family to celebrate the 70th birthday of her paternal grandfather, Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. The princess celebrated her 15th birthday three days earlier.

On 27 May 2016, Princess Leona with her parents and her younger brothers attended the christening of her first cousin, Prince Oscar, Duke of Skäne.

On 9 September 2016, Princess Leona along with her family attended the christening of her youngest cousin, Prince Alexander, Duke of Närke.
